Theatre Degree Information
Students at Loyola may complete a major in performing arts with a theatre concentration, a major in performing arts with a comprehensive concentration, an interdisciplinary major, a minor in theatre, or take theatre courses as electives. Students may also participate in theatre activities regardless of their major or minor.
Performing Arts Major, Theatre Concentration
Requirements for the Major
- DR 100 - Stagecraft
- DR 250 - Introduction to Theatre History
- DR 251 - Experience of Theatre
- DR 254 - Introduction to Theatre Design
- DR 350 - Acting I
- DR 351 - Directing I
- DR 375 - Evergreen Players Production
- Four theatre electives
Theatre Practicum:
- Students must also complete two one-credit hours of DR 275 and one one-credit hour of DR 276. DR 276 must be taken during the senior year.
Notes:
- No more than one of the following courses counts toward the major: DR 260, DR 261, DR 263, DR 278.
- Interdisciplinary performing arts majors with a theatre concentration take six required courses (DR 100, DR 250, DR 251, DR 254, DR 350, DR 351), DR 275 two times, DR 276, and two theatre electives, only one of which may be DR 260, DR 261, DR 263, or DR 278.
- Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
- DR 276 should be taken by students in their final semester before graduation.
Performing Arts Major, Comprehensive Concentration
The comprehensive concentration provides a well-rounded introduction to, and education in, the performing arts. Featuring a combination of courses from our theatre and music curricula, students will build the foundations to become a triple threat and/or undertake interdisciplinary study and research in the performing arts.

- One additional DR 300-level or MU 300-level or 400-level course
One course from the following:
- DR 301 - Improvisation

- DR 363 - Special Topics in Performance
One course from the following:
- DR 210/MU 210 - American Musical Theatre: Uptown and Down
- DR 250 - Introduction to Theatre History

- MU 300-level or 400-level course
Applied Music Lessons:
- Students must take a combination of MU 360 and MU 361 four times. MU 360 may only be taken once.
Theatre Practicum:
- Students must also complete four one-credit hours of DR 275 - Theatre Practicum.
Notes:
- Performing arts majors with a comprehensive concentration take a minimum of 5.5 credits of Applied Music (MU 360 and/or MU 361), MU 205 and MU 206 (1.5 credits each), and four semesters of DR 275 (1 credit each). Students register for these courses during the regular registration period.
- MU 205 and MU 206, MU 360 and MU 361, and DR 275 are taken in addition to the regular five-course load since they are not three credit courses. A combined total of six credits from these courses fulfill requirement towards graduation.
- DR 375 may be repeated a second time for credit in place of a DR 300-level elective.
- MU 361 is available only to students who have declared a performing arts major with a comprehensive concentration, a performing arts major with a music concentration, or a music minor.
- Students that test out of MU 202 take an MU 300-level or MU 400-level course to fulfill the requirement.
- Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
- DR 276 should be taken by students during their final semester before graduation.
Interdisciplinary Performing Arts Major, Theatre Concentration
Interdisciplinary majors allow students to combine interests in disciplines from two different departments that participate in the Interdisciplinary Studies program. This enables students to individualize their curriculum and helps to prepare them for our interdisciplinary world.

Theatre Practicum:
- Students must also complete two one-credit sections of DR 275 275 - Theatre Practicum and one one-credit hour of DR 276 - Theatre Practicum Capstone. DR 276 must be taken during the senior year.
Theatre Minor
