Music Degree Information

Students at Loyola may major in performing arts with a concentration in music, major in performing arts with a comprehensive concentration, minor in music, or take music courses as electives. Students may also participate in music activities regardless of their major or minor.

For students interested in teaching music, Loyola also offers a state-approved certificate granting program in music education. Students in this program major in performing arts with a concentration in music and minor in secondary education. Please contact Dr. Clay Price for further information.

Performing Arts Major, Music Concentration

Requirements for the Major

  • MU 201 - Music Fundamentals
  • MU 202 - Class Piano I
  • MU 203 - The Art of Listening or MU 204 - Western Musical Traditions
  • MU 205 - Musicianship I
  • MU 206 - Musicianship II
  • MU 302 - Structure of Music: Theory I
  • MU 306 - Music History I: Medieval to Baroque
  • MU 307 - Music History II: Classical to Contemporary
  • MU 400 - Musical Writing for the Public

Two courses from the following:

  • DR 210/MU 210 - American Musical Theatre: Uptown and Down
  • DR 254 - Introduction to Theatre Design
  • DR 350 - Acting I

Applied Music Lessons and Ensembles:

  • Students must take a combination of MU 360 and MU 361 five times. MU 360 may only be taken once.
  • Students must take 5 ensembles (as listed in note 3).
  • Students must take an additional three credits of lessons, ensembles, or DR 375 - Evergreen Players Production (with permission of the department chair).

Electives:

  • Students are required to complete two additional MU 300-level or 400-level electives.
Notes:
  1. Music majors must complete Applied Music (MU 360 and/or MU 361) and ensembles totaling a minimum of 17.5 credits, with at least 7 credits in Applied Music and 7.5 credits in ensembles. 1.5 credits of ensembles may be fulfilled by participation in a musical theatre production (DR 375) by permission of the department chair.
  2. MU 361 is available only to students who have declared a performing arts major with a comprehensive concentration, a performing arts major with a music concentration, or a music minor.
  3. Ensemble requirements are satisfied by Jazz Ensemble I and II (MU 211, MU 311), Chamber Ensemble I and II (MU 220, MU 320), Concert Choir I and II (MU 221, MU 321), Guitar Ensemble I and II (MU 230, MU 330), Steel Pan Ensemble I and II (MU 231, MU 331), Jazz Combo (MU 323), or Cantorei (MU 327).
  4. Musicianship I and II, Applied Music, and ensembles are taken in addition to the regular course load since they are not three credit courses. A combined total of six credits from these courses fulfill requirement towards graduation. Students register for these courses during the regular registration period.
  5. Students who wish to major in performing arts with a concentration in music may also minor in Secondary Education. These students should consult with the music and education faculty to discuss course requirements.
  6. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).

Performing Arts Major, Comprehensive Concentration

The comprehensive concentration provides a well-rounded introduction to, and education in, the performing arts. Featuring a combination of courses from our theatre and music curricula, students will build the foundations to become a triple threat and/or undertake interdisciplinary study and research in the performing arts.

  • MU 302 - Structure of Music: Theory I
  • DR 300-level course
  • Two MU 300-level or 400-level courses
  • One additional DR 300-level course or MU 300-level or 400-level course

One course from the following:

  • DR 301 - Improvisation
  • DR 354 - Acting II
  • DR 363 - Special Topics in Performance

One course from the following:

  • DR 210/MU 210 - American Musical Theatre: Uptown and Down
  • DR 250 - Introduction to Theatre History
  • DR 362 - Special Topics in Dramatic History/Literature
  • DR 370D - Queer Theatre and Film
  • MU 300-level or 400-level course

Applied Music Lessons:

  • Students must take a combination of MU 360 and MU 361 four times. MU 360 may only be taken once.

Theatre Practicum:

  • Students must complete three one-credit hours of DR 275 - Theatre Practicum and one one-credit hour of DR 276 - Theatre Practicum Capstone. DR 276 must be taken during the senior year.
Notes:
  1. Performing arts majors with a comprehensive concentration take a minimum of 5.5 credits of Applied Music (MU 360 and/or MU 361), MU 205 and MU 206 (1.5 credits each), and four semesters of DR 275 (1 credit each). Students register for these courses during the regular registration period.
  2. MU 205 and MU 206, MU 360 and MU 361, and DR 275 are taken in addition to the regular five-course load since they are not three credit courses. A combined total of six credits from these courses fulfill requirement towards graduation.
  3. DR 375 may be repeated a second time for credit in place of a DR 300-level elective.
  4. MU 361 is available only to students who have declared a performing arts major with a comprehensive concentration, a performing arts major with a music concentration, or a music minor.
  5. Students that test out of MU 202 take an MU 300-level or MU 400-level course to fulfill the requirement.
  6. Students must complete the diversity core requirement through a designated diversity core, major, or elective course (see Diversity Core Requirement under Curriculum and Policies).
  7. DR 276 should be taken by students during their final semester before graduation.

Interdisciplinary Performing Arts Major, Music Concentration

Interdisciplinary majors allow students to combine interests in disciplines from two different departments that participate in the interdisciplinary studies option. This enables students to individualize their curriculum and helps to prepare them for our interdisciplinary world.

Ensembles:

  • Students are required to complete 6 credits of music ensembles. 1.5 credits of ensembles may be fulfilled by participation in a musical theatre production (DR 375 - Evergreen Players Production) by permission of the department chair.
