Biography
Marie Heath (she/her) is an Associate Professor of Learning Design and Technology at 51¶ÌÊÓƵ; Co-Founder and Executive Director of , an organization with international reach that empowers students and educators to critically inquire into the effects of technologies on their individual and collective lives; Co-Editor of the ; and Faculty Associate at Loyola's Center for Research and Evaluation. She recently co-authored an award-winning book, . Prior to her work in higher education, Marie taught high school social studies in Baltimore County Public Schools. Her scholarship has won awards for its influence on teacher education, social studies education, and technology education, as well as for public reach and community engagement. She is a sought-after public speaker, award-winning teacher, and advocate for technological futures rooted in justice, joy, and democracy.
Research Interest
Dr. Heath's scholarship interrogates schools and technologies as current sites of encoded oppression, and labors to advance more just technological and educational futures. Marie has published over 50 scholarly articles, book chapters, and proceedings on AI, technology, justice, equity, and education. Her award-winning book, co-authored with friend and colleague , , was recently published with Harvard Education Press. She has also published policy reports on AI and Education through and to the , via the Special Rapporteur on the right to education.
Marie has published in prestigious and rigorous journals including Computers & Education; Education, Research, Technology & Development; Learning, Media & Technology, and the Journal of Teacher Education. She has won numerous awards including the The for her work on bias in AI; the 2026 Loyola University of Maryland Faculty Excellence Award in Community Engaged Scholarship; the 2025 Scholar of the Year at Loyola University Maryland; the 2023 The National Technology Leadership Initiative (NTLI) Fellowship Award (CUFA); the 2023 Best Paper Award in the Technology as Agent of Change (TACTL) SIG at the American Education Research Association (AERA); and the 2017 Innovation in Teaching Award for the Towson University College of Education. In Marie’s teaching, she works alongside students to technoskeptically inquire into the effects of technologies on our educational and social lives in order to work toward more just and democratic futures.
